Character Advancement

In this game, characters will not improve clichés in the typical Risus fashion, because I find it a little too random. Instead, characters will earn XP on their clichés which must be rolled against to advance. Each cliché will have an XP total associated with it and that total will accumulate in a few ways:
  • A cliché will earn 1XP the first time it is used in a session, in a non-trivial way.
  • A cliché will earn 1XP if used in a very creative and entertaining way.
  • A cliché will earn 1XP every time the result of a roll is all 6s.
  • A number of XP will be handed out by the GM for completing jobs and objectives (probably 3-4 for big ones), which can be divided among clichés as the player likes.

In order to advance a cliché 1die, a player may inform the GM at any time (even in combat) he would like to do so. He then rolls the max number of dice for the desired cliché, and he must roll lower than the current XP total. If successful, that cliché is instantly raised by 1die, but if unsuccessful then that clichés XP total is reduced by 1 and the player cannot try to advance that cliché for a little while. New clichés can also be added to a character at the GMs discretion, standard clichés costing 5XP and double-pump clichés costing 10XP (XP can be removed from any of a character’s clichés for this purpose). No cliché can advance above 6 dice.
